Venus In Chains
Venus in Chains
Why is she there?
Shackled to the wall?
Blood soaking her silks and
Sliding down her brow?
Hair in disarray
Robes torn through
Scratches and gashes and
Missing shoes too?
The goddess of love
Centuries of art
Every fools saving grace and
A romantic’s broken heart.
Why is she there?
Shackled to the wall?
A maniac grin and
Defiant above all.
Biding her time
Silence is a friend
That’s when they all come crawling
and beg to make amends.
You see, these poor mortals
Don’t know how to handle love.
They strum wrenching melodies
Calling for true love.
They read books and recite poetry
Screaming soundlessly
“Please notice me”
Daydream and fall under
Pleading for their lover.
They bring it on themselves
Praying for what they cannot control
Until Venus finally relents and
watches it consume them whole.
They think that it’s easy
A snap of the fingers
Laughing and smiling but
It’s the falling that lingers.
At first it’s a high
Giddy ecstasy
Driving them for more
Which only ends recklessly
The chaos of excess,
Paradise and pain
Slowly drifts to madness and
Leaves their prayers in vain.
Once begging for her beautiful gift
Soon turns to outright refusal
The madness is taking over
Sealed with a kiss and Manea’s approval.
So, why is she there?
Shackled to the wall?
Well the mortals couldn’t bear it
The burden of it all.
The jealousy, paranoia,
Emotional turmoil,
Euphoria twined with despair
Like mixing water and oil.
Instead they bound her in chains
Forced her hand to take it back
“This isn’t what we dreamed of”
Come their chants of attack.
But Venus understands
The madness and the thrill
The parts worthy of the sonnets and
The blood it causes to spill.
So she bides her time
The silence is her friend
Waiting for them to come crawling and
Begging for amends.
Because as awful as the torment is
Of being in love
Nothing can compare
To the torture in the void thereof
